Overview

The vast majority of Asians now live in areas with mobile coverage, broadband access services, fuelling rapid growth in the region's digital economy. With sophisticated smartphones opening up opportunities to deliver a wider range of essential services, from education to m-payments to preventative healthcare, online, as well as driving demand for a host of digital entertainment services.

Asians' increasingly connected lifestyle is also strengthening the position of major web brands, such as Apple, Amazon, Facebook and Google, in the region, raising questions for local telcos about where to compete and where to co-operate with these global giants.

The future of the digital economy in Asia and elsewhere is likely to be shaped by several key technology trends, such as the emergence of HTML5, the rise of cloud services and the impact of the exponential growth in mobile data traffic on telcos' capacity-constrained networks. LTE and fibre will clearly be needed to meet the massive demand for connectivity, but telcos still have to figure out how to generate an attractive return on the capital required.

This Executive Brainstorm brings together specially-invited senior executives from across the TMT ecosystem to debate the future of Asia's digital economy.
